Buffalo River Paddle Trip 2017
A recent trip down to the Buffalo River. 3 days and 2 nights of paddling fun from Ponca to Woolum, AR. at about 3.2 gauge height. Awesome trip with good eats and some wonderful scenery. Water was clear and flowing at a crisp 56*. 51 total miles achieved like it was nothin'!

Canoe camping on the Current River 2016/17

A 3 day 2 night (and my first),canoe trip down the Current River in Missouri's National Scenic Riverway. My friend Bob and I put in at Akers Ferry and paddled about 40 miles to the Two Rivers take out Dec./Jan 2016/17. An awesome spring fed river that flows year round with multiple springs ,caves, and bluffs. Very scenic and very little sign of civilization. Great trip, can't wait to paddle mor...

    Great video, Pete. Question: starting at the Big Piney Bridge and doing the hike as a loop, are there enough caves and overhangs that you could get by without a tent..? Thx, JP

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton 2 роки тому

      There is a massive overhang near the natural bridge near Hurricane Creek that would be perfect. I did not notice any caves, but they are very likely there...I was just focused on the terrain near the trail. The only way to loop this hike would be to use the high water bypass trail as the loop, then end up back at BP Bridge. There is so much cool stuff (rocks, caves, creek, bluffs some perfect for cave-man'n it) on the other side (Eastern) of Hurricane creek. This trip I went from BP bridge to the campground at Fairview. Its an awesome place with lots to explore!

    Is the aspire 100 fine for adults? I read it suits up to 300 pounds and for smaller adults. If your a larger adult to get the 105. What are your thoughts or options on that. I’m 6ft 142ish and when I first sat In it I thought it was too small! I was coming from a old town vapor 10 angler previously.

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton 3 роки тому

      Hey Cas, The main difference between the Aspire 100 vs. the 105 is about 3 more inches of cockpit space, and a capacity increase of about 50 lbs. Other than that, the hulls on both sizes are mostly identical. If you feel cramped in the 100, you will not likely feel that much more room in the 105. Both are adequate for adults with the 105 having a slightly larger cockpit opening, a bit more capacity & a slightly longer hull.

    Thanks for the review of the Aspire 100. I am new to kayaking and wanting to purchase my first kayak. All I have to compare by are the rentals I have used. I am presuming that the rentals are the most cost effective for the rental companies and are not performance driven; most have terrible tracking and are very uncomfortable. I am looking for a recreational kayak that will preform well in shallow running swift water rivers where you will most likely be be dragging or bottoming out frequently. I am concerned about durability, but I also want something with very comfortable seating, plenty of leg room (I am 6'1"), good tracking, and speed. Wanting to stay in the range of a 10 foot boat due to only have a 6 ft truck bed for transport, I keep coming back to the Wilderness System's Aspire 105 and Pungo 105, but now I have discovered the Aspire 100. I have seen many videos on the other two, but almost all reviews are done on smooth water lakes which does not really tell me how stable these are in light rapid situations, so do you feel this has good stability and durability for class 1 rapids? also thank you for covering details that the others did not, such as a replaceable skid plate and the issue with gravel getting stuck in the skeg.

    • @PeteBraginton
      @PeteBraginton 4 роки тому

      Hey Christopher, Thanks for sitting through the video! You bring up some great points so I thought I'd share my 2 cents. Here it is in a nutshell... ● Spend the $800-1200 on a nice yak. Better quality plastics, more useable features, more comfort options (<<<most important!) more durability, cool factor, all that stuff. You can drag a good yak up & down the gravel bar all day and it will never compromise the hull or performance at all. They are made for it. Compare to big box store yaks...you can FEEL the difference. ● Sit in as many different yaks as you can b4 you buy. Try different manufacturers if possible. Comfort in the cockpit is crucial. If its not comfy....you won't enjoy time on the water = kayak in garage😁 ●You're over 6'. The Aspire 100 is OUT (too small 4 you). The 105 is the same boat w/ slightly larger dimensions, might fit u better( can u sit in one?) ●10' boats aren't considered "fast" really. However, what they lack in speed, they gain in maneuverability/stability which is great for small twisty rivers w/ some obsticles/ rapids. ●Skegs. They are a must IMO. Better tracking & A BIG HELP when its windy. Plus, keeps the shorter 10' yaks from yawing side to side during paddle strokes. Rock jams in the skeg are infrequent and can be avoided, not a big deal. ● Judging by the type of water you paddle and features you're looking for I would ponder these options: Wilderness Systems Aspire 105. WS Pungo... its 12' but might fit you better. Dunno. Perception Zydeco Old Town Loon If you're feeling frisky, then: Dagger Katana Liquid Logic Remix Jackson Rogue Those would be my short list with the WS Aspire being my personal pick >>>IMO most comfy seat, SUPER stable( no Eskimo rolls in this thing!), roomy cockpit (that I could get in&out of & fit a sprayskirt ), SKEG, under $1000 leaves extra $ for paddle, PFD, accessories....its just a great overall yak for the type of paddling I do! If you are going more big water, class III-IV whitewater stuff and still want cargo area for camping the Remix or Rogue would be my choice no question. Hope that was somewhat helpful if you have any other questions lemme know. Float On!

    • @Chris-rg4jx
      @Chris-rg4jx 4 роки тому

      @@PeteBraginton Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my question and for all the valuable information you provided me with. I took your advice and drove 60 miles to get to the nearest Wilderness System dealer that had these yaks in stock. I was able to sit in the Aspire 100 and 105 , and the Pongo 105. You were correct as to the fit for my height in the 100. I was able to move my legs freely in and out of the boat without issue, but I still felt just a little cramped. The Aspire 105 provided that extra space needed to feel just a little more free to move and stretch. I found the Pogo 105 to have even a little more room and actually felt a little more comfortable sitting wise, but they both use the same seating system, so this could be because they were both adjusted differently and not fine tuned to my posture. The Pogo has a very nice designed dashboard which can be very user friendly; furthermore, the Pogo has a split V hull which may make it a little faster, but would cause it to feel less stable with more rocking motion. The Aspire has a flat bottom and the skeg which you demonstrated in you video, so it appears it would be a much better choice for stability. Guess I need to weight the pros and cons to conclude what's more important to me, but at the moment I am leaning towards the Aspire...as you mentioned..."no Eskimo rolls!" Also, you have given me some other brands I am not familiar with which to investigate. Thanks so much for you video, and for sharing you knowledge and opinions with me. I feel confident that because of this I will make a better educated and wise choice in the end. I subscribed to your channel and plan to view some more of your videos in the near future. Best of kayaking adventures to you :)

      Glad you enjoyed, it's a great little river to float! 4 days would be ample (Marble》Trigger, roughly 34 miles) without having to do big mile days. I would suggest keeping an eye on the river gauge...anything around 4'-6' is great from M. to T.G. and will give you an average of 3-4 mph. depending if you wanna paddle or drift. NOTE: beware of the low water bridge @ Marshall Ford, it can be dangerous at certain water levels...there's a safe portage on river left to easily avoid the bridge. Have an awesome float!

It froze and the spout ripped off at the threads when I tried to open it.(4× durability....not so sure) As for not using the funnel end, that would work well for moving water with flow.
